| Subject: Ironing Board Cover? Tue Jan 30, 2007 4:01 pm | |
| I wasn't sure where to post this, so I figured Vintage Home was the best place. I'm looking for a cute, floral print cover for my ironing board. I love the prints like Cath Kidston, and lots of the ones I see on British websites. But in the US, it's nearly impossible to find these. I've checked on Ebay, but most are too large for my ironing board (49in. by 15in.).
Does anyone have a resource for cute, shabby, vintage inspired prints on ironing board covers? Or does anyone have any idea how to use a larger board cover but make it fit my smaller board? I have the type of board that has a holder for the iron at the end.
Thanks! |

| Hmmmm, thats difficult, I've had a look at the websites I can think of and to no joy I'm afraid. I've just checked my latest Cath Kidston catalgue, where I had mine from - they do 2 sizes the smallest being 137cm x 50 cm and thats quite a bit wider than yours unfortunatley. We must use really wide ironing boards over here. |

| Rhian,
That's the one I wanted, but it's too big for my ironing board. |

| LOL Too funny Amy! I am sorry Karla...I don't have the slightest clue. I wonder if part of the reasons why most americans don't or hate ironing is because the iron boards are too small (fumbling with the fabric takes a bit of time). If I had an ironing board as big as my dinner table...I would not mind ironing my bedsheets! |

| | I remember when I was younger that my grandmother once had an ironing board cover that was slightly bigger than her board....she had this simple mechanism that was 6inch or so piece of elastic...with little metal clips at each end of it......do they still have those around? |

| I think I saw those online just now. They are kind of like the old mitten things. Remember those? It would hook your mittens to your coat.
You're a genius! I hadn't even thought of that. Thanks. Now I am set! Yippee! |

| LOL I am from Hawaii...we don't do mittens and coats there. I don't think I have seen what you are talking about....although I can somewhat picture it.
And you are welcome.

| I make my own ironing board covers and change them often - if you have access to a sewing machine, it's really not hard. Just be sure to use 100% cotton so you don't have any color transfer/melting, and wash and dry the fabric first in hot water/hot dryer so it pre-shrinks before you sew the cover.
Trace all around your old cover by about 2.5 inches (I use a black Sharpie and a yardstick), take a really long piece of elastic and stretch it tight (really tight!) while you zig-zag stitch it around the edges (bigger zig-zag means less chance of not "catching" it in the fabric and it's under the board anyway).
If you can find old 100% wool blankets they makes great padding...email me if you have questions (poem1us@yahoo.com).
