... wailed my confused niece as she pointed out that I smoke cigarettes but go to great efforts to live healthily and eat healthily... and that my bedroom includes a chest of drawers with my bras neatly lined up in rows and my lacy camisole vests all rolled up with the ribbon bow at centre and packed neatly alongside each other, while my bedside table is a vast mess of orange-peel, books, and empty coke cans and chocolate wrappers... as she pointed out that I make all my own toiletries but often forget to wash my face all day...

Is anyone else seemingly made up entirely of contradictions?!?!

I have always contended that I am a walking contradiction.

You're in good company with me.

Remember awhile back when I said that I just adore cleaning products, cleaning shows, housekeeping books, aprons, all manner of cleaning supplies? Yeah, well I HATE cleaning and avoid at all costs every chance I get. We don't live in muck, but it's certainly not as clean as it should be I'd venture to say.

There are many more of my own I could list, but that's a start at least.

Here's a real good contradiction and fortunately this is one that I don't do.

"I'll have a supersized burger with all the trimmings Oh and a diet coke" I'm trying to cut back on my sugar....duh.

Barbara - I've always found that particular contradiction so incredibly silly as well! LOL I'm glad you don't do it. I am one of those people that figures if I'm gonna eat bad, I'm gonna eat all of it bad! LOL

I also don't do Splenda..or basically fake sugar...what is the point.
The real results aren't out yet on all the fake sugars.
Give me the real thing.

Same here - I am not a fake sugar fan. NutraSweet gives me a headache no matter what it is in. Icky stuff.

Aw but the tons of junk food plus a diet-drink thing DOES make sense because dietcoke and coke taste really different!

No fair! ;-)

I do it - I'll buy a kebab of fried meat with all the rich fatty sauces and three bars of chocolate and... two cans of dietcoke...! But it's genuinely because I don't like the taste of full-sugar coke as much. It's like a person who loves single-malt fine Scotch whisky may be a little upset to be handed a fine Bourbon whisky and be told "hey they're both whiskies, what's the problem?".

I'm glad I'm not the only walking contradiction, though!

My drawer of camisoles just got worse, though - I found some tissue paper in pretty pale blue with white polka dots like the edges of Brocante, and now my camisoles are rolled up round it so there's a little polka-dotty tissue peeping out of each one... argh... this is not normal when I have yesterday's clothes strewn all over the floor!!!!

Half-obsessive and half-slovenly!

I quit smoking seven years ago. I therefore claim the right to be as contradictory as I please for the rest of my life.

I'll now depart to polish my halo.

I too am a mass of contradictions, but I can't think of a precise example as to how....... I guess, buying all organic and preaching about healthy eating and cooking - then (as I did this morning) eating two Kit Kat chunky bars from an easter egg for breakfast...... being really hot on being no-nonsense and getting my family members to visit the doctor/dentist etc asap if they have an ailment, but then being very lacksadasical (is that a word???) when it comes to my own ailments......like you Laura, I am slightly 'OCD' about where things go, and I'm constantly wiping down the kitchen surfaces, straightening things to be at right angles on the coffee table, fretting about cats hairs on the chairs, etc - but then my bathroom upstairs at the moment is probably insanitary! I think I am a very 'all or nothing' person - I either strive for perfection, or let a thing go to pot completely when perfection seems like just too much of a challenge!

I annoy myself constantly......

Laura - you're right. Diet Coke and Coke taste very different, hence the reason I don't drink Diet Coke - i don't like the taste. LOL Actually the more important reason is the headache thing I mentioned earlier. Diet drinks give me headaches, especially Diet Coke.

Sasha - I'm exactly the same way - all or nothing. Many times nothing will do just fine. I have a strange sense of perfection that causes me to do nothing because I know I can't do a thing as perfectly as I'd like, if that makes any sense at all.

Sasha and Karla,

We must be triplets separated at birth...HA!

yes lacadasical is a word...spelling is of another matter.

Did anyone ever drink Tab..it is a nasty thing that became so popular in the 60's and 70's.

Ya see, I think we need to balance life out with chocolate, be it chunky Kit Kat bars or a Coke, there has to be something profoundly medicinal in it, of course I have read the info on dark chocolate..they just came up with the data we were the ones that were their guinea pigs , so to speak.
Us and about 2 zillion other women. I also think contradiction is too rough of a word because I also think it is closely related to PMS and hormones and menoapuse and sssshhhh don't want the men to know we actually admit it.

OH gosh don't even mention PMS right now. LOL I have a bag of M&Ms, a bag of popcorn and a glass of Iced Tea waiting for me in the other room. LOL

I'm going to adopt that as a new life principle - balance life out with chocolate! Sounds wise and easy to do.

Karla, you make perfect sense to me - thank goodness I am not alone in the world! And thank you for the spell check Barbara! My spelling is getting worse as I get older - I really should sit here with a dictionary close at hand.

In all seriousness, you have made me feel much better, as I really haven't met anyone else with such an extreme sense of all or nothing perfectionism before - or anyone that doesn't think I am a bit weird because of it - could I be normal after all????!! It is hard to call yourself a perfectionist when outward appearances may tell a different story.......

ER... try reading "The New Messies' Handbook"... seriously, I know the title sounds jokey but it is the ONLY method that works for me and a few others I know for decluttering (as opposed to spending huge effort just moving things to another pile without achieving a thing).
The idea is that we "Messies" (I know, makes me wince too) are different from "Cleanies" (ouch) because most people, seeing a bit of white fluff on a dark carpet will pick up the fluff and find time later to vacuum the rest up. We are perfectionists so as we know we don't have time just now to do the whole vacuuming, furniture-moving, etc., properly then we don't start the job, so we spend all week stepping round the fluff and not even seeing it eventually.

It's actually a very intelligent and well-researched psychological study, well-written apart from the two terms above, and easy to understand and follow.

I have tried an awful lot of decluttering methods but this one works, probably because I understand that I'm not hopeless, just unusual.

Or usual, maybe in here!!!!

I better read that book - perhaps it will help me understand myself better. I'm convinced that there are more "messies" in the world than "cleanies".
