I thought of "housekeeper" as a cleaner, too. However, I see it really sounds more like a manager. "Keeper" - a word that implies keeping the house all together - managing. Good word!

Yet, what I've always liked is, "homemaker" ~ because that's just what a woman is in her home. Whether she is a full time executive vice president, or full time stay at home mom, it's the mother who actually sets the tone of the home, who makes the home what it is - for better or worse. That's true even if she doesn't mean to do that job.

So, "homemaker" is my favorite term, but I like "housekeeper" too, now.

I saw a really cute "title" the other day for a "housekeeper/housewife" - the article stated that this lady was a CFO - Chief Family Officer. Loved that!!

A breakthrough! Whilst filling in a form today, I had the option to choose 'looking after home and family' as my career! That's a bit better than bogstandard 'housewife' - you don't see 'househusband' as an option do you??

No. Just as you never hear a man discussing how he can combine career and family.

It's rather infuriating - I'm not a feminist by any means of the definition - but at the same time it definitely makes one feel less-valued - especially if you work just as many hours as your husband and yet somehow he magically doesn't have to do anything at home, but you still have to run the entire household and all that goes with it.

Been there, done that, got the grey hair to prove it (thank goodness for L'Oreal!).

Hmmm - think maybe I hear some resentment in my statement I've not dealt with. LOL

Not at all. Its absurd. Its how many years since the women's movement etc.. and we're still holding the baby. As it were. For most working women, a job is an economic necessity, not some whim to keep you in lipstick and shoes.

Mind you the few men who chose the househusband role don't get any support either. Lots of raised eyebrows and sniggers.

PostSubject: Hello from Liverpool   Sat Feb 23, 2008 6:44 pm

Well...not sure what happened but this is the first time I've been able to post here on this page....it's been timing out on me each time. I've just posted on the Simple Abundance section so if any ladies are reading any of SBB's books or would like to share about SA....I'll be watching out for any posts.

Hello....my name is Jacquie and I am a Canadian, living in the UK. I really like the look and feel of Brocante Home and will look forward to getting acquainted.

I am married with 2 adult kids and 4 grandkids....love 'em all to bits. We own and run a newsagent's business...long hours....but get to read lots of newspapers/magazines (have to forego the chocolate though...I'm eating healthily now and as a result am loosing weight).

I'm loving the emerging "me."

Anyhow....hello out there Be blessed.

Hi Jacquie! Sorry I somehow missed your post earlier.

We are so glad to have you here! You'll find this group of ladies just lovely and so much fun to chat with. Look forward to getting to know you better!

I'm Karla and I live in Oklahoma, in the US. I think I'm perhaps the poster that's been around the longest here at the salon.

I look forward to reading your SAA posts. I've been going through her books too, but have struggled with faithfulness on that mission this year.

Karla, thank you for your warm welcome. Please don't feel bad about struggling with faithfulness regarding following through on Sarah's beautiful writings.

I am yet to get acquainted with a woman through Simple Abundance who has not had "time apart" from faithfully following through on it all. It's sometimes a seasonal thing...and I am thankful/grateful that it's splendid when I am in the rhythm of it all...."feeds/nurtures" the inner me if that makes sense.

When it's "your time" to partake of the Simple Abundance path you will do it...and love it. It's surely been my experience...we're all on a learning curve.

So you're an Oklahoma girl...."where the wind comes whistling down the plain." I bet you've heard that quoted many times before (lol).

Nice to "meet" you, Karla.....and the other ladies who've made me most welcome. I love the salon to bits!

PostSubject: Why Hello There!   Tue Mar 04, 2008 10:49 pm

hello ladies! (i hope i'm not making any sweeping generalisations!!)
i am new to the forum and indeed to brocante-world - but i am really enjoying mingling with the natives!
my name is michelle and i live in the middle of ireland with my husband and 7 year old daughter. although i have worked as a physiotherapist (in ireland, canada and the u.s.)for many (feels like about 2 hundred) years, recently i have made the decision to not see patients but to concentrate on teaching (women's health issues, esp back pain, pelvic floor issues, menopause/hormone health, yoga & pilates) and writing. the financial transition is interesting but it's all starting to come together - if i write it down, it must be true, right?!
i live beside an old abbey, founded in the 6th century and re-modelled in the 15th century, so my true addiction is seriously vintage vintage! celtic spirituality, herbal medicine, and giving people the tools and power to help themselves, rather than a prescription are my current passions.
my hubby is from connecticut and is enjoying the quiet and peaceful life we build together here.
so lovely to hear from all the ladies and dedicated home makers on this site - i recently heard the term 'domestic engineer' and thought it sounded terribly impressive, but a little bit scary!
looking fwd to hearing from you all, slan agus beannacht (health and blessings)
michelle

Welcome Michelle! We are excited to have you here and your wealth of knowledge will be called upon quickly and regularly I'm sure!

Your surroundings sound just lovely and I can see why your Connecticut Yankee is finding it so pleasurable there, not to mention I'm sure he's delighted with your company! LOL

I live in Oklahoma, in the middle of the US. My husband and I have two daughters, 14 and 12, and three dogs. I have just recently begun to work from home after being out of the home for the past 7 years or so. I'm loving it but still getting used to the transition.

I look forward to getting to know you better! We do have another Michelle, so we'll have to make sure and say which one we are talking to now that we're blessed with two of you!

Ooooh irisheyes! I look forward to lots of interesting discussion with you! ;-)

I spent last year mostly without much (at times any) use of both arms and was rescued over Christmas (what timing!) by a new superduper wonderful physiotherapist who has now, after only 6 sessions in 2 months, declared that my body now has no pathological process ongoing; I just need to build up the enfeebled muscles without recurring injury - and interestingly, she treated my spine, where there was no pain...
So physiotherapists are some of my VERY favourite people, as you can imagine!!!

And the herbal remedies... ooh, I can see a lot of interesting discussion here too! I get the impression you may have some different views, eg the spirituality side (I'm a cold-blooded scientist!), but as anyone here will tell you, I'm a fair old hedge-witch, experimenting with lotions and potions from my garden - mostly topical and for skin/hair care, but I also tend to use food as a medicine when feeling low, so I'll be interested in your views on that, too!

Maybe we could start a hedge-witch thread!

Welcome!!!

laura
p.s. I know "hedge-witch" is often used to describe someone with specific pagan beliefs, whcih I don't have, but I just love the term so much ;-)
