I'm looking for vintage china. Mostly accessory type items like this gorgeous cake stand I found on eBay! Now if only I could find one with a cover!

That is truly amazing! Not my style, but I can appreciate its cuteness!

Can you make a cover? I've made a few - buy bridal-net, rather that ordinary net as the mesh is finer; use wire coat-hangers for wire. Cut two or three pieces and curve them over a football or something to make them into semi-circles the right dimension to cover the dish. Two will make a square cover; three or even four make a circular one. Cross them in the centre and tape firmly so keep the 'ribs' apart evenly. If you like, cover the wire with that kind of fabric-y sticky-tape you can buy in craft shops. Then cut a huge circle of bridal-net (it comes in pink as well as white!) and stretch it over the dome-shape of wires. Now stitch from the centre, keeping the net taut, and stitch down each 'rib', taking the thread form the outside through the net, round the wire and back up to the outside. When it's stitched to all ribs, trim with scissors leaving an edge to turn up and either just stitch that, or edge with some pretty braid.

It sounds more complicated than it is - you're really just making an umbrella without the handle!

Use a big brass curtain-ring for a handle at the top where the wire cross, or sew a loop of pretty ribbon, or the braid to match the edging.

Thanks for the suggestions Laura. I've not bought the stand, but I was eyeballing it. Turns out its not vintage, but Rhian's right. Its unusual. Circusy, I'd call it.

There's a butter dish with a cover like a big slice of sponge cake that is really nice.

Thanks Laura for the cake cover directions. I like that.

Ali, what a cute cake plate. Perfect for seeing the eyes of a child brighten! I'd get one of those - providing there's room on the shelf for one.
