this little shelf was my great grams ( born 1891) she used to write things on the backs of all her belongings( who would inherit it, or where it came from) and she wrote on the back of this too! it says HER dad made this shelf out of a shingle..its all hand carved. im sure a wood barn roof shingle. her dad was wm wade, born during the civil war. im so happy she labeled the shelf for the family history as well as seeing her handwriting!!!

How wonderful Terri! As you say, just seeing your Great Grandmother's handwriting is fabulous in itself! I fear further generations of children may be doomed to never seeing our handwriting first-hand - what with all the computerised 'writing' we all do nowadays. That would be a big shame. I think a person's hand written work is so personal and touching - you can imagine them making each stroke.

My mothers and aunts handwriting was beautiful. Fortunately I have cards and letters still with it. My aunt is still alive but she had a stroke so she has to write with the opposite hand.
