| Hello Ladies,
I am here to appeal to your crafty senses! For my sins I lug a laptop around on an almost permanent basis for work. I have managed to shuck the horrid black laptop bag which everyone seems to carry; but now find myself in quandary. I want to protect the wretched little black box, but don’t want the horrid harshness of laptop bags/protectors that you find in the shops.
What I am after ladies, is a pretty quilted little ‘envelope’ for it. Now I am rather handy with a needle, but I just don’t have the time find the fabric, lining and work out quite how to make it. Has anyone seen anything like this for sale? Anywhere?
To perhaps complicate things, I live in England. |

| Take a look at this: http://www.elisalou.com/bags/laptop_sleeves.shtml
Also, if you are able to get Simplicity Sewing patterns, I found two really cute patterns there. And I know that at Simplicity you can order the patterns online. I tried adding the link to the site, but when I clicked back it didn't work. The pattern numbers for Simplicity are 4391 and 3889.

| I just made a black twill laptop bag for DH with a drawstring and an opening for the power cord. It was *really* easy. You wouldn't have to buy lining - you could use pre-quilted fabric...AND I found this really beautiful "shabby chic" prequilted fabric with roses on Ebay UK:

You could fold it over and finish the top with seam binding...I left a two inch opening on the left seam for the power cord....maybe even a lovely check/ginham in pink and cream seam binding...and a tiny bit of lace inside that only you could see...

| Thanks for these ideas, I knew you wouldn’t fail! The fabric is lovely, perhaps I could buy it whilst I search out a pattern. The simplicity site is helpful; good pictures which I think I will use to adapt my own ideas with. I already have a very pretty and bright bag that I carry all my work papers with which stands out from the normal crowd of black bags, so something in this lovely fabric would be a joy! |

For those of us here in the States, Fabric.com has some really pretty quilted fabric as well-there's some brown floral that I really liked.
FYI I took the laptop, folded the fabric over it and then basted the one top seam so that there wasn't a lot of "wiggle room" in the sleeve. If you were to do this, leave about 2" of room at the top, you could enclose the seam in a kind of french seam (you sew the seam, trim the seam flip everything the other way, the stitch again, enclosing the first seam within the second seam (so it looks finished). Like I mentioned before, if you used some bias binding around the opening (I'm still lobbying for a very small pink and cream check...) you wouldn't have any bulky folded-over areas.
I found these:

Oh this is just the job! Someone has done all the thinking for me. My other half will be tied to his deck in the office all weekend so I may go on an adventure to find some material and ribbons and whip this together on Sunday. Thank you for all your help! |

| I was wondering if you couldn't also use an old bowling bag and then dress it up a little... Depending on the size of your laptop... _________________ --Jenn http://web.mac.com/thriftshopromantic/iWeb/ |

| | Photogal - that's gorgeous! I'd buy it right now, but my friend and I are organizing a trade in which she's making me something similar. |
