| When we were little, Helen and I would come home from school to a cup of tea and a plate of Marie biscuits in front of the fire with Mum. It was heaven and a memory to be treasured always: that feeling of relief at being home and the total security of knowing Mum would always be there waiting for us...
Ritual, as you all know, matters to me. Life wouldn't be much fun if we didn't have scrumtious little tiny treats scheduled into our day and there is always much to be learned from other women and their families: rituals we can magpie, embrace and make our very own...
How do you make life special? _________________ Lots of love, Alison at BrocanteHome. http://brocantehome.typepad.com/brocante_home/

| I have a cup of tea and a couple of cookies (biscuits) or small chocolates in bed with a magazine or book, every night without fail. I almost can't get to sleep comfortably without it.
And every Sunday afternoon I take a nap in my bed, surrounded by tea on a tray, loads of magazines and Food Network or HGTV or an old movie playing on the television. |

| | Every now and then I like to make real afternoon tea when Lucy(7) comes home from school, I prepare a tray groaning with treats, tiny little triangular sandwiches with the crusts cut off, home made scones, a victoria sponge and a lovely old china tea pot filled with steaming hot tea! we bring some quilts down from the bedroom, light all the candles, and sometimes watch a movie or just chat about how school has been, Lucy absolutely adores this, and it really is worth the effort, I hope she looks back at those rainy afternoons, when after a long day at school, she came home to a lovely cosy tea time! |

| Ladies day is my most favourite scrumptious treat. Once in a while, (I'd like it to be once a month but that is rarely practical when you're married to the Army) my daughter and I have ladies day. We go to the salon and each have our hair cut and styled and coloured. Then we window shop, and go to glorious little cafes and sip tea and eat cake. we dress in our finery. We carry gorgeous little hand bags. And it is mandatory to speak in a very posh british accent the whole time. My girl is truly a Daddy's Princess. But every once in a while, she's Mum's girl. Thanks to Ladies Day! (Of course now that the pre-teen boy craze has started, she's more mine every day. Which makes me laugh. Her father may be scary to her future boyfriends, but she can take it to the bank that it is Mum who'll be the hard nut. I remember me at her age.) I'm going to need Ladies Day memories so she'll at least have some fond memories of her Mummy! |

| | Milky coffee, in a proper bone china cup with saucer, around mid afternoon. May or may not be accompanied by something sweet to nibble. |

| When I was in school, every day when I came home I would sit infront of the fire and my mam would bring me coffee and biscuits which i ate while watching kids tv. Then my dad would come home from work and we would all eat a homemade meal, prepared by my mam together. And on a monday, my dad would collect me from school, and we would go shopping around town to kill abit time before he put me on the bus to go to my grandads house in seaham. My mam looked after my grandad when he could no longer look after himself, and mondays was one of the days she used to go to his house and clean, cook and shop for him. I got off the bus and my mam and grandad were always looking out of the window, waiting for me.My mam had a beautiful meal prepared for us, every monday we had a sundays dinner, as that is my favourite meal, with all the veg, tatties and yorkshire puddings, and my mam, grandad and I would all sit around the table and I would tell them how school was, which my grandad loved to hear, he was so proud of me. After dinner we would all watch abit tv, then I would go in my grandads kitchen and bake something for my grandad. That was a ritual I will treasure forever. My grandad has been gone for almost 8 years, (it will be 8 years on the 9th october) and I miss him so much, there isnt a day goes by when I dont think about him, he was, and still is the best.
The rituals I do regulary are, every night when we go to bed I put sleep balm on my pulse points and lucious thick handcream on my hands, then I put on special gloves, and when I awake in the morning, my hands feel so soft. I light candles every night. And when the housework is done, and I can relax I drink tea out of the beautiful bone china cup and saucer which belonged to my gran, it has exquisit blue flowers hand painted on them, and the teapot I make the tea in belonged to my grandad, and has beautiful flowers painted on it, so not only is this ritual an act of relaxation for me, it is an act of love, as these precious things belonged to those I loved dearly and who are now in heaven. |

| | I really need to find me some rituals - not just habits, but rituals. Habits, I have a lot - I have lived alone my entire adult life, and when I need to stay somewhere for a longer period (I had to move back home a few years ago, due to a very bad financial judgement), I really feel how they are stuck - I donīt like to adapt to the habits of others! But rituals - that sounds like a positive thing, a time to gather your thoughts, to relax and unwind, I need to make some of my habits into rituals. I always drink tea in front of the tv, maybe I should find myself a nice cup, buy/make some cookies, read a good book, listen to some music instead, at least for half an hour? Or doing the laundry - I always swear and cuss and hate laundry day, instead, I could bring the mp3 player, get some scented linen water, iron everything, take my time and let it be a peaceful moment. I really need to work on my rituals! |
