Have any of you heard of Miss Read? If not, I urge you to buy her books. There is alot of them, as most of them are in a series, there is the Fairacre series and the Thrushgreen series, also afew novels. They are such good books, set in a little english village, and they are so funny and cosy. The characters you come to love, and you feel part of their lives, they are full of homely things, describing what their homes look like, the little chores they do, and the delicious meals they cook. Im currently reading At Home In Thrushgreen, which is almost at the end of the Thrushgreen series, and I just cant get enough of these books,I read the Fairacre series first which is excellent.
So if you love reading about village life, read these books.

I saw this post Melanie and I picked up 2 of the Fairacre books so far. They are the kinds of books I love to read with I need to just relax. I really enjoyed them. They were perfect for those snowy nights but they would be just as wonderful in the summer while sitting on the beach. Thanks for the recommendation. Holly

I'm so excited - I had forgotten to check my library catalog for these until I saw the updated post. I checked and the library has 3 Fairacre books! I've put them all on reserve. They have 42 of Miss Read's books! Yay!!

I'll have to check my library. They relocated it and I haven't had a chance to find out where it went. If nothing else, I'll just go on Amazon also and see what I can find. Which titles do you recommend to start off with?

Michelle - I had to laugh at your comment - I kept thinking of a Sherlock Holmes character going around town with a magnifying glass looking for the library - something right out of a children's after-school tv show. LOL

Hope you find the library! What a terrible thing to lose.

There are 2 series, and afew novels. There is the Thrush Green series, and the Fairacre series, both are really good, but be warned, there is alot of books in each series, the few novels that she wrote are good too, but I prefer the Fairacre series, it is so cosy and homely.

LOL Karla! The library we had in town was built in the 60's so it wasn't that old so I don't know why they relocated it. They made it into the new Board of Education so I don't know where they relocated it haha. I haven't seen it around town so now that I think about it, I'm really curious where it went off to haha.

Melanie -

I must give you tremendous thanks for recommending the Miss Read books. I'm currently reading a few of the Fairacre books that my library has, and although they aren't the beginning of the series, I am so enjoying them that I could see myself purchasing these books to enjoy for years to come. They are just so delightful and so Brocante! They rank in my top 10 series books of all I've read. Just love them so!

I live almost next door to our local library and I'll be going in to see if these books are available. It is years since I read a good book like that....they sound absolutely perfect.

I am on a journey of rediscovery of things I did pre-children and the person I was when I really liked/loved myself (long story!!). Anyhow, I used to read those kinds of books years ago and they helped me to feel womanly and kind-hearted (if that doesn't sound too naff!). I'm rediscovering that woman again and I love it!

I am so very thankful Melanie for your recommendation. I really will enjoy this favourite pastime which has totally escaped me for much too long.

Jacquie x
