I just ordered The Beauty Queen's Makeover by Teresa Southwick and Celia's House by D.E. Stevenson. Celia's House was recommended by one of the members here on another thread (sorry, I can't remember who!).

I wish I could find more book full of cozy domesticity....

I love D.E. Stevenson and Celias house is great. I've never heard of the beauty queens makeover but I will be looking for that now.

I love Rosamunde Pilcher and Miss Read. I also like Agatha Christie, the Miss Marples are my favorites.

I would love to get names of more authors that write books full of descriptions of houses and garden and such.

Anything by "O.Douglas"!

She was Anna Buchan, sister of the great author John Buchan (who wrote The 39 Steps), and described her fiction herself as cosy domestic fiction.

Characterisation is superb, domestic details wonderful, plots believable... everythign about them is perfect. They were written between the wars and she doesn't shy away from the widows and orphans that the Great War created nor the fears of the looming next War... but at the same time she gets everything in its right perspective and basically her books make you feel really good about all kinds of things, from how you look to how the world is and how your family and household are!

And you can pick up the charming little Nelson's hardbacks on eBay for a couple of quid each.

Laura, I tried looking for O.Douglas at the library & on Amazon.com, but couldn't find a thing. I was so disappointed!! Her books sound like exactly what I'm looking for....

Here you are
http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=o.douglas

The first and tenth are not her, but everything listed simply as O.Douglas is - from a couple of quid to a tenner or so.

Enjoy!

I have received Celia's House and I can't wait to read it! But first I am trying to get through a stack of library books I borrowed.

I found a copy of A Year In Provence by Peter Mayle at the thrift store yesterday for 25¢! I've been wanting to read this for quite some time and now I have my own copy. Yay!
