| ive just read the coolest book!! it took me less than a day because its so good!!! its called "The vanishing act of Esme Lennox" by Maggie O,Farrell
Esme Lennox is a girl before her time who does not conform to 1930's society norms and is locked up by her family in a mental asylum. Esme had 2 major catastophies happen,one as a child and the other at age 16, but her family in no way links these to the way she acts. They never see her again after they admit her. Sixty years later, her great niece, Iris,( who owns a vintage clothing shop) receives a phone call to tell her that the asylum is closing and she needs to take responsibility for her grandmother's sister - which is the first time that she has ever heard of Esme. Of Esme's family, only her sister Kitty (Iris's grandmother) is still alive, and she has Alzheimer's.
Esme is a wonderful character and I felt angry by the way that she had been treated all her life. The narrative jumps between Iris, Esme in the present day, Esme and Kitty as children and Kitty in the present day. Kitty has Alzheimer's so her sections are written in a rambling way, but reveal alot! Its a great story!! |
