The book that started it all.
Without Simple abundance there wouldn't be a BrocanteHome. It is as simple as that. Each week I will be posting a quote from one of Sarah's books, and leaving it open to discussion here on the forum. Please join in... _________________ Lots of love, Alison at BrocanteHome. http://brocantehome.typepad.com/brocante_home/

| | I did Simple Abundance two years in a row, because the first year was hit or miss. This year I'm going through Something More. I have almost all her books, most I bought used in good condition. It used to be a nightly ritual to read out of the daily entries, but I got away from that. Looks like I need to get started since it's already Jan. 24! Surely I can catch up this week and get where I need to be. |

| I'm not really familiar with this book. What do you mean, by,
"I did Simple Abundance..."? "working through Simple Abundance..."? "Can't wait to get started..."?
I've slightly looked at a copy once, and I saw it was something like a daily devotional of sorts. Does she give assignments each day or something? |

| Yes, it goes day by day. Some days are just something to read. Other days she gives you things to do, from writing something to window shopping, etc. It's a great book. I just have trouble starting on Jan 1st and sticking to it all year. But I really love it. I still pick it up here and there. In fact, it's always either in my living room or bedroom, easy to grab at any moment. With some notes stuck in it here and there too.
If you start the book sometime and it's not January, it's good to still start at Jan 1st in the book to get to her tips on doing your gratitude journal and a few other things that all explain the basics of the book. But then you could also read a few days here in there in the current month you are in because it also has seasonal things too. Actually, at the end of each month she has a page of seasonal/monthly things you could do in that month. So if you are starting the book not on Jan. 1st, just be sure to read those end of month suggestions for the month you are in. That would probably work well.
I guess though if you are in the other half of the world you should start reading it in the summer....so you flow with the seasonal talk in it??
I got her scrapbook type book on sale at Borders once. It is full of large blank pages to make your collages (mentioned in the Simple Abundance book). I have things cut out but so far have not glued anything in yet. It's a fun process though. And funny.....many of her suggestions are now in the book, The Secret. Like having daily gratitude. And the collages are similar to vision boards.
I also got her first book, Mrs. Sharp's Traditions: Reviving Victorian Family Celebrations of Comfort and Joy. It's an absolutely beautiful book. I got it from half.com for like $5. It's hard cover and has beautiful illustrations and a ribbon bookmark attached. It has a lot of things typical if you have already read about old traditions and ideas. But it's also got some stuff I never heard before. And it's just so beautiful. It's comforting to read and look at. I would like to get more of her books. |

| I found Simple Abundance for half price at our local bookstore's used book section. So, I decided to get it and see if I like it or not.
I do like it. It's not nearly as "new age-ish" as I had suspected. A lot of her musings are things I had discovered long long ago, being close to the Bible, which is the book of peace. I like her way of looking at beauty. I like that she had made a conscious decision to slow down. I started reading on the day I bought it, and did some reading in January as the introduction suggested. I am by no means where she is in terms of being orderly to start with. There is so much clutter around me that I need to be rid of before I can really bring in, say, a vase of beautiful flowers. Where would I put it with so much stuff on every horizontal surface???
I'm looking forward to going through the whole book. So far, I've read each day's entry since I bought it. I hope to be much improved in my housekeeping by this time next year. I am so inspired here. |

| | I read Simple Abundance years ago, when I heard about it on the Oprah Show, and I really enjoyed it, I actually copied a lot of it (by hand!), because I wanted to keep some of the ideas, but hadnīt the budget to go aout and buy the book. Now, Iīm borrowing a copy at the library, and who knows - maybe I end up buying it anyway, and some of her other books... |
